A quick space lesson

Why is the distance from Earth always changing?

Earth and the other planets all orbit the Sun at different speeds, so the space between them grows and shrinks. That's why this site shows an approximate distance range instead of pretending there is one fixed number.

For truly up-to-the-minute positions, you'd need a live planetary ephemeris. This page is designed to teach the big picture.

Images use NASA-based appearance maps; distances and spacings are not drawn to scale. The displayed near/far numbers are rounded orbital-geometry estimates, not real-time measurements.
